European debating competition to take place at Dundalk Library next month

Debaters ranging in age from secondary school students to the active retired from across Louth and the north-east are being invited to take to the soapbox at Dundalk Library next month as part of a European debating competition.

The winners from the Dundalk competition on October 18 will receive an Apple iPad and a trip to Brussels along with the chance to represent their region in a national final at Farmleigh House with a first prize of €1,000.

The topic for debate will be the age-old issue of whether ‘Youth is wasted on the young’ with competitors having three minutes to state their case before a public audience and a panel of judges.

Nessa Childers MEP will attend along with personnel from the European Commission Representation in Ireland.

As well as their local prizes of an iPad and trip to the European Parliament in Brussels, the winning Dundalk debater will go on to the national final to be held in Farmleigh House in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on November 20.

Looking ahead to the soapbox competition, Sheila Tierney, Manager, Europe Direct Centre at Dundalk Library, said:

“We are continually impressed and pleasantly surprised by the articulate and confident people we meet in this debating series but also more generally through the year at the library branches and in the Europe Direct centre at Dundalk Library.

“The question of whether youth is wasted on the young has been debated from different perspectives for generations and we look forward to some great contributions from debaters of all ages next month.”

Entries for the Dundalk soapbox competition on October 18 can be made through www.europedirect.ie or by calling to Dundalk Library. Registration is required 48 hours before the event.
