e30,000 worth of drugs seized during search

A 30 year-old local man was remanded in custody following the seizure by Gardai of over €30,0000 of drugs from his home. Judge Leonie Reynolds directed that Ciaran Yore of Mayfield Drive, Haggardstown undergo drug urine analysis tests and adjourned finalising sentence until February 21.

The accused was charged following a search of his home nearly six years ago and pleaded guilty. Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court heard on Thursday that he was no longer taking drugs and had disassociated himself with associates that he had been involved with at the time.

Garda surveillance resulted in a search being carried out of his home in June 2007 in which cocaine and ecstasy to the total value of €32, 560 was seized. Various other items were found among which were knives, a weighing scales, €2,350 cash, a spoon and bags with a cannabis leaf logo and documentation including a list of names.

Detective Garda Shane Fennell said the accused indicated he was paid to hold some drugs in his home. He was reluctant to identify who supplied him with the drugs or say anything about the money that was found. He purchased the ecstasy and admitted selling them to friends. The Detective said that the accused became visibly upset when the Gardai entered the house. Other members of his family were present. The accused had nine previous convictions for motoring offences but none in respect of drugs. Barrister Donagh McDonough said the accused moved to England following the incident. He returned after eight months but Gardai didn’t know. He was arrested over four years later in respect of having the drugs for sale or supply. He was using drugs at the time. He co-operated with the Gardai but was afraid to answer questions on others involved. The accused severed all contact with negative peers and quit drugs. He was doing a course in DKIT and training in a gym five times a week and working in his father’s panel beating business. He was deeply ashamed and was stated to be at low risk of re-offending.
