‘Duped’ into storing
head shop drugs
A MAN was duped into letting his premises be used to store €1.1 million worth of head shop drugs, Dundalk district court was told last week.
Robert Kennedy (35) of Milltown, Castlebellingham – who was described as a ‘scapegoat’ told Judge Flann Brennan that he thought that only packaging and shelving was being stored.
The court heard the gardai recovered head shop drugs with an estimated street value of 1.1 million euro when they carried out a search on the 11th of December 2010 at a house under renovation.
The investigating garda said the other individuals involved led the defendant to believe that he was storing shelving and display units, from a shop they were closing down.
The garda confirmed during cross examination by the Defence solicitor, that the accused had cooperated fully with the investigation, and was considered to be of good character and standing.
The court heard the defendant who was living in a mobile home beside the property at the time, had only one previous conviction from 2001 for driving without insurance.
Robert Kennedy told the court he had no knowledge that there were head shop products involved, while the solicitor explained that the products – which were originally legal, were first covered by an amnesty and were declared illegal when the rules changed.
Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case until the second of January, so a community service report could be prepared and indicated he had 240 hours in mind instead of a 12 month sentence.
