Dundalk's Gerry Duffy, who made a brief appearance on Glenroe, remembers the later Miley

IRELAND lost one of its best-loved actors last week following the death of Mick Lally, best known for his role as Miley Byrne in Glenroe.

He has been remembered fondly by many people in recent days including Dundalk's Gerry Duffy, who famously appeared on the top RTE soap on Christmas Eve 1989 with the legendary Lally.

Gerry appeared in two episodes of Glenroe as an extra with his wife Eileen and Chris and Marie Noonan. The quartet won the prestigious honour after raising over 1,000 for People in Need in their local, The Century Bar.

They travelled to the filming with Tony and Dympna O'Kane, the then owners of The Century, and even 21 years later Gerry admits to having fond memories of the experience.

"I met briefly with Mick Lally back then but we were mostly with Joe Lynch during filming.

"Mick seemed nice. In fact, he was probably nicer than the rest of the cast that day but we just had such a great day overall.

"We got some great laughs out of it.

"It was a pity to hear about Mick though. He is legendary for his role of Miley and was also a great Irish speaker," said Gerry.
