Dundalk family thank rescuers for finding body of Stephen after river tragedy

THE family of a Dundalk man who drowned when his boat capsized while on his way to help a friend have extended their thanks to everyone who was involved in the three-hour search operation.
The family of Stephen Fergus from Waterview, Lower Point Road, Dundalk expressed their “heartfelt thanks” to all who assisted in the search and who helped in any way following the accident.
The 48-year-old father-of-two had taken a small punt out from Soldiers’ Point to reach another boat on Sunday at about 3.45pm.
However, he went missing shortly afterwards when his punt capsized.
Mr Fergus was going out to his boat moored off shore to travel to another vessel which was having engine trouble.
An extensive search was launched involving various Coast Guard units, Clogherhead RNLI and Dundalk Sub Aqua Club. His body was recovered at the entrance to Dundalk Bay shortly after 6pm.
Mr Fergus was a caretaker for Dundalk Town Council and worked in the Town Hall. He is survived by his wife, Lisa; their two teenage daughters, Erin and Amy; mother, Eileen; brother, Kevin; sisters, Kathleen and Maureen; and mother-in law, Margaret Hande.
He is predeceased by his father, Hal, and brother, Paul, a former car mechanic who also died in tragic circumstances after sustaining serious injuries while working on a car which fell on top of him. See also pages 2 & 3.
