Dundalk set to come to standstill for funeral of murdered garda
The town of Dundalk is set to come to a standstill today, Wednesday, for the funeral of murdered garda Det Gda Adrian Donohoe. The Cavan native who was killed outside Jenkinstown Credit Union on Friday night will be removed to St Joseph’s Redemptorist Church at 12.30pm today where Funeral Mass will be held.
President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan and Minister for Justice Alan Shatter are all expected to attend the Mass. Businesses across the town will close during the Funeral and employers have been asked by the local Chamber of Commerce to allow their employees to pay their respects.
After the Mass, the funeral cortege will pass through the town of Dundalk where Det Garda Donohoe dedicated his career. The cortege will also pass Dundalk Garda Station where he worked. His burial will take place in Lordship cemetery.
Traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the town for most of the day and large crowds are expected to attend the Funeral Mass.
Det Gda Donohoe was murdered by a criminal gang last Friday night outside the local credit union in Jenkinstown. The gang escaped with just 4,000 euro in the raid. His Funeral takes place at a time when Gardai confirmed that they believe they are closing in on the people involved in the murder.
Today, however, will be about honouring a Garda, a sportsman and above all, a family man who made Dundalk his home.
