Grace Duffy and Jack Gilmore, who both attend Scoil Mhuire na nGael in Dundalk, are two of the 12 winners of the IKEA and LauraLynn 2012 Art Competition, themed “What Makes Me Happy”.

Jack and Grace, who are just nine years old, received a hamper each of IKEA arts and craft supplies worth 100 euro as well as an 1800 euro IKEA community donation to their school.

The Dundalk Democrat spoke to Scoil Mhuire na nGael Principal Martina Rafferty about the pupils achievements.

“We were all thrilled here at the school when we heard that Jack and Grace had won, both of them are very artistically talented and deserve it.

“They had to draw something based on what makes them happy. Grace drew the Easter Bunny and Jack drew a Halloween inspired drawing.”

The Principal told the Democrat that the whole school was delighted to receive the generous donation from Ikea and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Like every other school we have had major cutbacks this year to our resources so the money was greatly needed.

“We used it to buy resources for the infant depart such as play benches and crockery. We also bought new mats for the school, storage supplies and First Aid kits.

“All of us at Scoil Mhuire na nGael are very proud of Jack and Grace and the fact that not one but two of our pupils won is a testament to the school.”

The 12 winning pictures of the competition are featured in the 2013 IKEA Dublin calendar.

The calendar is now on sale from IKEA, costing 5euro, with all proceeds going directly to the LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

All of the monies raised from sale of the calendars will go directly to the LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

LauraLynn Hospice is IKEA Dublin’s local charity of the year for 2012 and supports children with life limiting conditions and their families. This is the second year of involvement by IKEA Dublin.

LauraLynn Hospice Project was set up in 2001 as a result of an enormous personal tragedy in the lives of Jane and Brendan McKenna which saw them lose both of their precious daughters Laura and Lynn in the space of just two years.
