Dundalk makes its mark again

THE IDA figures for 2012 show that of the 12,722 jobs created in Ireland last year, 1,400 of them came to Dundalk.

This was the case even though the town makes up just 0.7 per cent of the country’s population.

As the President of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Mr Paddy Malone says in our new column Talking Points, this week, this is a clear indication that the town is once again a major industrial player.

While praising Louth Economic Forum for its contribution to this turnaround, he also points out that the Chinese company Satir came to Dundalk mainly because of Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT).

A few years ago, a major IDA and Government delegation visited China. Included were representatives from DkIT who established links with a Chinese college.

Those connections played a major part in the decision by the Chinese to set up Satir, their infra-red technology developer and manufacturer, in Dundalk, the only Chinese company, so far, to set up in this country.

And another Chinese company is also expected to make Dundalk its base.

And when the Chinese Vice President, and now President, visited Ireland last year, he was presented with copies in Chinese of the Louth Economic Forum’s foreign direct investment report by Dundalk’s Town Clerk Frank Pentony.

You will not find a town more enterprising than that.
