Dundalk Town Council has adopted the new agreement between Louth County Council and fire services staff.

Acting county manager Joe McGuinness told members of Dundalk Town Council that calls to the fire service in Dundalk will be dealt with within one to one-and-half minutes on a 24/7 basis.

He said that under the new agreement Louth Local Authorities now have a safe service in place.

The agreement will provide for 55 full-time and 16 retained staff to be employed in the county.

Under the new system fire-fighters will form part of a five-group duty system.

Each group will consist of two crews. The crews will work on 10-week shift cycles with 12-hour shifts starting at 8am and 8pm.

Mr Eamon Woulfe, Chief Fire Officer, Louth Local Authorities has said he was looking forward to expanding fire safety programmes and putting Louth to the fore nationally in risk reduction and fire prevention.

“This effort will concentrate largely on homes in the county,” he said, “which is where the greatest fire dangers are.

“It is also a progressive step that the new agreement provides a greater focus on training and professional development.”
