Dundalk business, Backhouse Pharmacy celebrates its tenth year in business.
BACKHOUSE Pharmacy are delighted to be celebrating 10 years of business in their current location in Clanbrassil Street this year.
However, it's 10 years since they made the move to Clanbrassil Street and they're celebrating their decade on the main street by sending a special thank you to all those who have helped them hit the special milestone.
Proprietor Martin Keown has been part of Backhouse Pharmacy's Clanbrassil Street operation from the very beginning but he even he admitted that it was hard to believe 10 years had passed since they made the move to their current location.
"I can't believe it's 10 years. The time has absolutely flown by," he said. "I worked in the old place in McEvoy's for about two years before we relocated here. I bought into the business at that stage and since then we've become more established and the bigger and better premises has definitely helped us do that," he said.
Backhouse Pharmacy employs six dedicated and experienced staff including Eileen Greenan, Briege Casey, Therese Murchan, Frances Walsh, Meghan Fitzpatrick and Celia Coyle and Martin praised them for helping the store become so popular with its customers.
"Some of the girls are here about seven or eight years but most of them are here about four or five years now anyway. That means a lot because it's not only about what you have but the service you provide.
"Customers do like seeing familiar faces and being able to have a bit of banter with the staff is important and we enjoy that ourselves here. "Over the years we've built up a good relationship with a lot of our customers. A lot of them have become very loyal to us and we're thankful to have them.
"All the staff are very customer friendly and I think that's one of our main attractions for a lot of people," he said.
"People want value for money these days and we try to reflect that with the deals we offer. "We have a number of 99 cent offers running at the moment on a range of products, most of which are well known such as Colgate toothpaste or Sure roll-on.
"People at the moment want bargains but we also have to try and cater for what the consumer wants so we offer a lot of cutdown prices for special occasions. "For Mother's Day, for example, we have 20pc off all fragrances while for St Patrick's Day we're offering 33pc off Ovelle's Elave range to support a good local, Irish company.
"I know at the minute there is a lot of doom and gloom around and that the town has suffered but we're still here and I still think there are a lot of viable businesses around who are doing their best with prices to provide people what they want.
"We're trying to be as competitive as the likes of Semi Chem but without the impersonal feel," said Martin. And when he looks back on Backhouse Pharmacy's 10 years in Clanbrassil Street, it's the customers he thinks of most.
"We've developed a lot in 10 years and it's good to look back on that.
"Above all though I'd like to thank all those have supported us in that time because without them we wouldn't be here," he said. Backhouse Pharmacy is open from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm.
