TWO brothers who have over 250 previous convictions between them were jailed in Carrickmacross District Court this week.

James Maughan, 56 Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamor and Terrance Maughan of 68 Barrack Street, Dundalk both pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

The men were being held in custody and had been denied bail at an earlier sitting of the court.

The men were charged that on 30 August 2012 that they took a Green Viking ride-on lawmower from Laragh in Castleblayney.

They were also charged with possessing a Ford Transit which they knew was stolen or were reckless to whether or not the vehicle was stolen on 1 September 2012.

The court heard that the pair were stopped on Thomas Street in Dundalk. One of the brothers, Terrance, attempted to run for it but was sucessfully caught by Gardaí.

In the back of the Ford Transit a Green Viking lawnmower was found, which had been stolen a few days previously from Larragh in Castleblayney.

It also transpired that the Ford Transit had beenstolen a few days earlier and bought by the men for e1,900. The registration plates had been changed.

In their defence their solictor told the court that the two had wanted to go straight but had fallen into bad company once they were released from prison in the North.

She also said that they had been duped into the buying the van for more then its market value, though the Gardaí said that it was worth approximately e3,000.

She said that James Maughan had several children and had also undergone a servere surgery on his stomach recently.

The court heard that James had over 50 convictions, the vast majority of which were in the North.

His brother Terrance had 205 previous convictions, again the vast majority of which were in Northern Ireland.

Supt Gerard Russell described the pair as “career criminals”.

Judge Sean MacBride said that he had a duty to protect society from such men and said that their crimes were outrageous.

He sentenced the pair to nine months in Castlerea Prison.
