Drove off after hitting bumper
A 19 year old man who drove off after he hit another car’s bumper, was given the benefit of the Probation Act at Dundalk district court last week for careless driving.
Kongoma Kindembo of Church Street Carrickmacross was also charged with hit and run offences, driving without insurance, and being a Learner driver unaccompanied by a qualified driver, arising out of the incident at Church Street, Dundalk on the 7th of June last.
The original court hearing was told the accused had pulled out of a parking space and hit the rear bumper of the car in front, but failed to remain at the scene.
The court heard the defendant is a Congolese refugee, whose mother is an invalid and as his father was unwell on the day in question, he took it upon himself to take his mother to Dundalk to get some food in an African food shop.
The Defence solicitor said her client thought he was covered to drive the car, which was insured in his father’s name.
She added the defendant - who had no previous convictions, had panicked and put his hands up, when the guards called to him.
The case was put back compensation could be paid.
After he was told yesterday that €1,200 had been handed over in total, Judge Flann Brennan struck out the no insurance prosecution, applied the Probation Act for careless driving and marked the other offences taken into consideration.
