DkIT's most popular duo, Student Union President Luke McGahon and Vice-President Subhash Khanal prepare to move on

The date has been set for the impending departure of DkIT's most popular duo, the Student Union President and Vice-President.

For three years, Luke McGahon, 25 and Subhash Khanal, 27 have fought tooth and nail for students on campus on issues such as parking spaces, fees, accommodation, grants and more than one can imagine.

But on March 25, a new era will be ushered into the college as the Student Union elections will take place and after three years in the hot seat, Luke admitted he is keen to move on.

He said: "Speaking for myself and Subhash, we will miss it, but it is time to move on.

"Now is the time for candidates to get out and find out what the main issues are this year, is it car park spaces or library problems? They need to find out the little things that can be changed.

"Students need to see people doing something to get involved.

"Myself and Subhash were delighted to do three years, but at the same time we can feel a little detached from the students as it has been over three years since we sat in a classroom."

Luke and Subhash are going to be advising any candidates on the work that is needed for the role and will hold an open invitation to potential candidates to meet them on February 17 at 3pm.

"Whoever goes for it should be looking to get re-elected next year as in the first year, you are only finding your feet. In the second year, you know what can and can't be done.

"The people who get the jobs tend to be the ones who come up with something innovative. Students see through the stupid ideas, the ones which will not work."

In 2009, the Student Charter in DkIT was changed, allowing Luke and Subhash to run for a historic third term, because they had a lengthy 'Fight the Fees' campaign to win, something which was won with an unexpected twist from the Green Party.

"That was the main reason we went again and it ended earlier than we thought, perhaps it subsidised because we went in so strong at the beginning, but with that out of the way, it allowed us to look at other stuff as we were expecting a long hard battle."

When asked what it is like to move into the 'real world' now, Luke said: "It does not get more real than this, looking after 4,500 students, but I might go on and do my Masters as I like the student environment."
