County councillors in Louth decide to name the Boyne bridge
Cllr Declan Breathnach
Louth county councillors have decided to name the Boyne cable bridge.
It will be called the Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge.
But that’s only the county Louth name for it.
In Meath it is called the Boyne Valley Bridge.
The confusion seems o have arisen when Meath county councillors decide to name the bridge not realising that Louth councillors might take offence as half of the bridge is in Louth.
The Louth County Council chairman and Acting Manager met their counterparts in Meath last Friday and all sides seem to understand one another but a very confusing debate arose at Monday’s meeting of Louth County Council.
Cllr Jim Ryan’s amendment to have the Bridge simply called Boyne Cable Bridge drew a tie in support with councillors voting 12 - 12.
Then Cllr Declan Breathnach compromise to name it Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge also drew a 12 - 12 vote.
The chairman used his casting vote to support the Breathnach amendment.
