Congo refugees to be resettled in Carrickmacross
REFUGEES from the Democratic Republic of Congo are preparing to make Carrickmacross their new home under the national resettlement programme.
The aim of The Refugee Resettlement programme is to give families who have been tortured, injured and bereaved as a result of conflict a chance of a new and safe life.
The scheme will see 66 refugees comprised of eight families move to Carrickmacross and other Co Monaghan towns at the end of November.
The families, which consist of 21 adults, 17 teenagers aged between 13 and 18; and 28 children aged 12 and under, have been living refugee camps in Tanzania for several years.
They arrived in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo in September and are currently taking part in an eight-week orientation programme that aims to prepare them for life in Co Monaghan.
Monaghan County Council is co-ordinating the delivery of the programme with statutory bodies and community and voluntary groups to ensure the smooth roll out of the resettlement.
The resettlement committee set up to oversee the programme decided to divide the group "in order to ease the pressure on service providers, in particular on schools".
"The refugee resettlement programme supports extremely vulnerable people who have experienced significant trauma and upset in their lives," said Bernie Bradley from the Office of Community & Enterprise in Monaghan County Council.
For further information on the programme or if you would like to get involved contact Bernie Bradley on 047-73727 or bbradley@monaghancoco.ie.
