THE death has taken place in Florida of Fr Patrick Kennedy, formerly of Dundalk.

Fr Kennedy who was a parish priest in the US had previously worked in parishes in Louth.

When he completed his studies for the priesthood at St Patrick’s College Maynooth he moved to Dromiskin in 1961 were he assisted the late Monsignor Henry Toal.

He was then appointed a curate in Togher parish and later moved to Ardee.

He worked for some time at Clongowes College in Kildare and then took up diocesan work in Florida.

His brother Shane Kennedy was a Marist Father and predeceased him.

A very popular priest, Fr Kennedy returned to Dillonstown in 2005 for the golden jubilee celebrations of Dillonstown school.

He celebrated Mass at the school for parents friends and past pupils.

Fifty of the eighty pupils who walked from the old school to the new one in 1955, made the same journey that day.

In July 1955 Fr Grimes had celebrated Mass at the opening of the school which at the time was one of the most modern in rural county Louth.

The site was donated by the Osborne family and fundraising efforts included the first Annagassan carnival. The entire project was completed without the parish going into debt.

Over the years, a thousand boys and girls past through the school.

In the sixties, Fr Kennedy was a curate in the Dillonstown parish. On his return he met many of his old friends and was warmly welcomed by the people of the parish.

There was much memorabilia on display in the school for the celebrations including a DVD Dillonstown Memories.
