Coláiste Lu doors open

There was great excitement in Coláiste Lú last Saturday morning when the new school threw open its doors at 9:45am for the first time to students and parents.

Coláiste Lú is a new post-primary school and will operate entirely through the medium of Irish.

Classes are set to commence for students this September and the school will be managed by Co. Louth VEC and will open at one of its three premises in Chapel Street, Dundalk.

On Saturday the school held its first ever induction and assessment morning for those students that will start in the school this September.

Parents and students were welcomed by Ardmháistreas Úna Kirk and múinteoirí, Mr. Michael Ó Coillte, Ms. Maria Nic Eoghaidh and Mr. Ciarán Ó Conboirne.

While students tended to their assessment tasks, including one administered using laptop computers by all, parents were treated to a tour of the facilities followed by some light refreshments in the school canteen.

Parents and students were extremely impressed with the standard of accommodation and all of the facilities on offer for the students. T

he school also lined up some musical entertainment for its guests which included Ms. Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla on the harp and Ms. Caitlin Nic Chonboirne on the pipe.

There was a great buzz in the air as everyone began to realise the momentous occasion that it was, and as it began to sink in all that had been achieved in getting the school to this day.

Following the formalities everybody gathered in the school canteen to hear more about how the school would operate.

Ardmháistreas, Úna Kirk, told the audience that the school would start each morning at 8:55am and classes will end at 3.35pm.

Lunch time activities will be provided each day for students and after school study will take place four days per week up to 4.45pm each day.

Students will receive their iPad and text books from the school’s book scheme and all of the students were assigned their lockers on the day. Students also got to choose their school uniform.

Coláiste Lú now enters phase two of its development which will see a new Science room and Technology workshop added by this September.
