Century-old Ardee business is in top 100 best in Ireland

A MAJOR national business award has gone to one of Ardee's oldest businesses.

Callaghan Butchers and Deli has just received a Retail Excellence Award, a national accolade aimed at promoting standards in the Irish retail industry.

"We are now regarded as one of the top one hundred shops in the country," said a proud Peter Callaghan.

"The awards cover all the retail businesses in the country from Dunnes Stores to your local corner shop.

"We had a mystery shopper who came in and judged us last week and everything turned out well and we got a 90 per cent approval.

"Now we have a chance to advance to the next step, Best Store in the province. We have a good chance so hopefully we'll do it."

Callaghan's have won many top awards for their products and a couple of years ago celebrated 100 years in business in Ardee.

Peter's grandfather opened the shop in 1906.

His great-grandfather died when Peter's grandfather was 18. His grandfather married Mary Rowentree from Reaghstown and they had 10 children, and one of them, Johnny - Peter's dad - took over the business.

Peter and his brother Andrew moved into the business in 1988 and served their apprenticeships. Andrew opened his own shop in Bettystown and Peter is now running the business at 58 Market Street Ardee.

"I'm still doing what my great grandfather was doing," said Peter. "I'm going out and buying the cattle and sheep from the same local farmers.
