CCTV key to ‘pleasant’ Rag Week

The CCTV system at College Manor, a visible Garda presence and a student union campaign meant that a pleasant “Rag Week” was had by all.

John Temple, Chairperson of the College Manor residents’ association, believes that the newly installed CCTV system in the estate was the key to a successful week.

“The CCTV eliminates any anti-social behaviour,” said John while speaking to The Dundalk Democrat, “The students were informed of the system by the DkIT Student Union. The Gardai made full use of the system and the footage was checked regularly.

“It was a zero tolerance approach to the event and it seems that the students enjoyed themselves, which is important.

“Compared to previous years, this was a very quiet year and respect was shown to the families that live in College Manor and the adjacent estates,” John added.

College Manor is the first estate in the town that has CCTV installed, making it one of the safest estates in Dundalk.

According to David Branagan, he was not aware of any major incidents and praised the student community for the respect they showed.

“I am very happy with how things went during the week,” said David, “Some complaints might have been made, but I have not been informed of any major incidents.

“We canvassed the estates the previous week and informed residents how to get in contact with us if they needed. We had meetings with the local Gardai and residents’ association and our class representatives also spoke to students.

“Overall it was a very successful week. The mock wedding was held in Vanity in Carrickmacross and the DkIT got a letter from the club stating that the students were very pleasant.

“Although RAG week raises money for charity, there is a knock-on economic benefit for the local economy,” David added.

DkIT students are now preparing to go to the polls next week to elect new members of the student union.
