Call to transform old landfill

CLLR Conor Keelan has once again asked Dundalk Town Council officials to contact the Environmental Protection Association (EPA) to see how soon the old Dundalk landfill site on the Newry Road can be developed into an amenity site.

At a previous meeting of the council Cllr Keelan referred to an article in The Irish Times which reported on plans to transform a former dump in Cork city into a central park.

The old Cork landfill will be redesigned as a family leisure and recreation centre.

This will transform the 29 hectares of the old Kinsale Road landfill into a leisure and recreation facility, with a large multi-use area, playgrounds, wildlife and biodiversity areas.

The park is scheduled to be formally opened in two years and fully completed by 2018.

The Kinsale Road dump served as the city’s main landfill from the mid-1960s until three years ago.

The Dundalk landfill was closed in 2005 and is currently under the supervision of the EPA.

Cllr Keelans has asked that a report on a similar reconstruction in Waterford. He believes that Dundalk could benefit from a similar plan.
