A LOCAL couple had their trusty golden Labrador Bruce to thank for chasing off two would-be burglars early last Friday morning.
At approximately 3:30am two men attempted to gain entry into the house of Paul and Rachel McGivern at Ard Easmuinn.
However the couple’s loyal dog Bruce sprung into action and woke up Mrs McGivern by barking and growling incessantly.
Mrs McGivern came downstairs and seeing her pet in some distress in the kitchen she opened the back door to let him outside.
“He was growling and baring his teeth. It was quite frightening, because he is usually a very placid dog,” explained Rachel.
Once Bruce was allowed outside she watched as he scrambled down the garden towards two shadowy figures below.
“As I opened the back door I could hear voices down the garden and could just make out two figures running away,” added the Ard Easmuinn resident.
Bruce chased the two intruders to the bottom of the garden where they jumped over the wall and fell down the embankment on the other side, which leads down to the train tracks below at Clarke Station.
“When the two men made it over the wall they appeared to jump down. But it’s quite a fall on the other side, at least the height of a two storey house. I heard some shouting as they disappeared and then it went quiet.”
The Gardai were alerted to the incident, but the would-be burglars were not found.
Later Mr McGivern spoke to the Gardai and they informed him that there have been a number of burglaries lately in which the target was the home owners car, with the thieves gaining access to the house in order to steal the keys of the vehicle.
According to the Gardai the recent spate of break ins is being investigated and they have warned homeowners to be extra vigilant.
Speaking to the Democrat on Friday afternoon Mrs McGivern also said that the hero dog was being spoiled rotten for his bravery.
“We’ve been giving him treats all day. Although I’m not sure he knows what for,” she added.
