Brandished baton in a case of ‘drunken bravado’

Gardai watching CCTV at Dundalk Garda Station saw a man in Earl Street brandishing an extendable baton, the local court was told.

Stephen Smith, Villas 3, Muirhevnamore appeared on charges of public disorder on January 28 last.

Inspector Brendan Cadden told the court that defendant was still brandishing the baton when Gardai arrived on the scene. When they approached he threw the baton away. It was located nearby, the inspector said.

He was directed to leave the area but refused and became irate and aggressive, roaring and shouting, taunting the Gardai and calling them names. A large crowd had gathered at the scene, Judge Alan Mitchell was told.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell said that his client had been involved in an incident of “drunken bravado”. He had been “trying to impress people who might not be impressed by him”. He had been digging a hole for himself by refusing to go home.

The judge ordered defendant to perform 50 hours of community service and imposed a fine of e100.
