BLOG - Are your kids safe this Christmas?

With this time of year comes the dark winter mornings and early dark nights and as a parent our attention goes to our children's safety walking to and from school or to their favourite shopping centre.

What if they get attacked or approached by a stranger would they know what to do?

What if they where equipped with the power and the knowledge on how to deal with such things and what to do to handle these situations?

This would give you and them more confidence and as parents we would be able to relax a little bit more with the knowledge that they are could deal with these situations.

One of the most important safety tips I will cover in this article is that of stranger danger.

STRANGER DANGER SAFETY TIPS

1.It is important your child walks to school/shopping centre with friends and in groups

2.Make sure your child never accepts a gift or a ride from strangers.

3.They should know never to take shortcuts to school or to your home especially if the short cut is not well lit or secluded.

4.If they are followed they should go into a store or where people are and NEVER hide.

5.The highest percent of attacks and kidnappings come from people you know and family members.

6.They should never leave school without permission.

7.If left home alone they should know not to answer the door for a stranger.

8.They should know how to Keep all strangers out of their danger zone (striking or grabbing distance). We teach this all the time in our martial arts centre to all levels and ages.

9.Tell them 'Don't be afraid to yell loudly' and say 'no' if a stranger approaches you.

10.It is OK to kick and punch someone to get away if he/she tries to attack you.

11.It is not ok to kick and punch people for no reason.

999 SAFETY TRAINING (4yrs to 14yrs)

1.999 is free from any phone

2.Children should Memorize their address and phone number.

3.They should know to Call 999 if you see a fire, car accident, or if someone is sick or hurt.

4.It's important they Describe what they see as clearly as they can.

5.Tell them "Do not hang up until the operator tells you to."

6.They must know Never call 999 as a joke.

I hope these safety tips help you and your family feel safer. In my Martial Arts Centre I run a free child safety workshop for children from age four to 14 years old covering topics of such as:
