Beer theft charges

A case against an 18-year-old youth charged with stealing beer from a Dundalk off-licence has been put back so that he can avail of a place on an addicition treatment programme.

The youth cannot be named for legal reasons. He was charged with the theft of 24 cans of beer worth 40 from Maxol, Castletown Road on December 28 last. He was also charged with intoxication at Castle Ross on the following day.

Gardai told Dundalk Court how they had arrested the youth at 8.55am on Wednesday and charged with the offence that day.

The youth’s father said his son had got an assessment for an addiction treatment programme in the county but was not able to travel there because he was in court. Efforts were made to contact the addiction service involved. Judge William Hamill was told by Gardai that they would not object to bail on certain conditions.

The youth was released on his own bail and told to reside at his address and to tell Gardai when he takes up a place at the treatment centre. The case was put back to February 6.
