Band's narrow escape from Dublin shooting

TOP local band Who's Eddie? had a lucky escape on Sunday night/Monday morning when they narrowly avoided a shooting at The Player's Lounge in Fairview in Dublin.

The four piece band – made up of sisters Jacqui, Dara and Orla Molloy and their brother Keith – were playing in the northside venue shortly before a lone gunman opened fire on drinkers gathered in front of the pub from across the street. Pub doorman Wayne Barrett was hit in the head and is in a critical condition at Beaumont Hospital while two other customers are also being treated in the Mater Hospital.

Having finished their set less than an hour before the attack – which took place shortly after midnight – it was pure luck that Who's Eddie? weren't in the firing line as well with band member Jacqui Molloy admitting to The Dundalk Democrat that they had had a lucky escape.

"Some of the bands who play in Player's park in a laneway at the back and take their gear in and out that way but we always park to the front and when we finished up at 11.30pm I was holding the door for Keith as he packed the van.

"That would've been about 11.50pm and the doorman was there at the time and he was very nice.

"We went back inside after that and we were in the changing room until about 12.15am. After that we left and went down the street to where we were parked. That was all I knew about it until I got a call the next morning telling me what happened.

"It seems it happened literally minutes after we left. Certainly, ten minutes didn't pass between what happened and us leaving the pub."

Having been outside the pub – which is owned by John Stokes, father of Irish international Anthony - for a good period prior to leaving Fairview, Jacqui admitted that the band had had a lucky escape.

"We so easily could've been in the wrong place at the wrong time but thank God we were gone.

"We wouldn't normally play there on a Sunday night and if it had been on a Saturday then we would have been on stage at the time. We're fairly well booked this year but we had a cancellation so we agreed to play there.

"It wouldn't stop me playing there again because these things can happen anywhere but a shiver does run over you when you think what might have been. Thank God we're all here to tell the tale though." she said.

Who's Eddie? will be back on stage this weekend with a series of gigs, including one in Courtney's Bar, Park Street, Dundalk, on Sunday night.
