Baby Ellen bravely battles virus in Temple Street

It was a tough Christmas period for baby Ellen Barron McGee and her family as she was taken to Temple Street Children’s Hospital Intensive Care Unit after catching a bug.

Little Ellen’s parents Tom and Lisa, from Aishling Park, accompanied her on a trip to San Diego last year where she underwent life saving stem cell treatment.

Up till a couple of weeks ago Ellen was making great progress and responded positively to the treatment.

Unfortunately for Ellen, who has mitochondrial disorder, the same condition which killed her brother ten years ago, she caught the bug and is now battling against the virus.

“Ellen was doing fantastic until she picked up the bug,” said dad Tom while speaking to The Dundalk Democrat this week, “But she will keep on fighting.”

“Up until about five week ago everything was good. Everybody was pleased with how Ellen was progressing, but this is now a set back.

“Ellen is in the ICU in Temple Street since Christmas Eve.

“It’s a standard virus for children to get at this time of the year, but because of Ellen’s condition it makes it a lot worse. The hospital is full of children that has the virus.

“We nearly had her home for Christmas, but these things happen.

“We have a long road ahead of us, but Ellen and everybody will battle it,” added proud Tom.

Meanwhile Ellen’s twin sister Grace was being looked after by grandmother Winnie McGee and family in Dundalk this week.

All going well, it is hoped that Ellen will receive her next round of treatment in April.

“We hope the treatment will be organised for April and a fundraising campaign will help this, but at the moment we are hoping that Ellen will make a full recovery.”

In March of last year Ellen captured the heart of the nation with her heartbreaking story. Just a few weeks shy of a year, the little girl is still battling on.

Long may it last.
