The EU PEACE III Programme supported exhibition opening of “Art in the Allotments” took place on Tuesday 18th December at 3pm in the Muirhevnamor Community Gardens, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk.

‘Art in the Allotments’ was a fun and creative art project which took place over a seven week period, late last year. D

uring the seven weeks, three facilitators worked with a group of ten young people from Muirhevnamor and Dromiskin, to help them establish and understand what peace-building meant for them and to then represent this in a creative way.

The team of facilitators included project co-ordinator Sophie Coyle from Creative Spark, organic gardener Damien O’Callaghan and “rubbish” artist Uli Liebetrau, who each worked with the group of young people in the new Creative Spark building to create Peace sculptures out of recycled and salvaged materials.

The exhibition was opened by Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Town Council, Jennifer Green. Also in attendance was Cormac Long, Co. Louth VEC, Lucy Rafferty, Manager of the Muirhevnamor Community Gardens, Sarah Daly, Business Development Manager at Creative Spark, and Paddy Drumgoole, Louth Peace & Reconciliation-ship Secretariat.

The 8ft works of art are now on permanent display in the community gardens on Hoey’s Lane and mark the beginning of a sculpture garden which will be used for recreation and the enjoyment of nature and art.

The project was supported by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme as awarded by the Louth Peace and Reconciliation Partnership and was managed by Co. Louth VEC’s ‘Peace of Art’ project.

Sophie Coyle’s role was funded by the IFI through Creative Spark.

The Special EU Programmes Body is responsible for managing two EU structural funds Programmes.
