ARDEE Educate Together National School is celebrating its 10th birthday. The multi-denominational school opened in September 2002 with 20 pupils and two teachers.

It has now grown to over 100 pupils with six teachers and two special needs assistants.

The school hopes to move to a new state-of-the-art building on its own grounds - near St Joseph’s – in 2014.

A full size school complete with special needs unit has been granted. And the layout and dimensions have been planned.

The new school building will cater for the growing population of mid-Louth which is predicted to peak in 2016.

Enrolments are currently being taken and the third application for the special needs unit was received last week.

As well as growing to five times its original size the school has notched up its fair share of awards in its short lifetime.

They have three Green Flags for anti-litter, recycling and waste management, energy conservation, and water conservation and they are currently working on its fourth Green Flag for travel and transport.

They have won the Louth County Council Environment Awards for Best School (three times), Best Teacher (Principal Ann Middleton) and Junior Environmentalist of the Year both Girl (Lana Jordan) and Boy (Lorcan Dixon) Awards.

They won the regional and national Supervalu tidy towns awards and Louth County Council and Ardee Town Council held a civic reception at Ardee Castle in their honour.

Other accolades include the National Woodies DIY School Vegetable Garden Award, the regional and national Lidl Fit Factor Award for their project work on healthy lifestyle and fitness, the Yellow Healthy School Flag, and the first Blue Activity Flag in Louth for sports.
