An all Irish second-level school is set to open its doors in Louth in 2013

Enrolment forms are set to be issued soon for prospective students of Coláiste Lú, a new all-Irish second-level school set to open its doors in September 2013.
Co. Louth is one of only a small number of counties that currently does not have an all-Irish second-level school.
According to the CEO of Co. Louth VEC, Dr. Pádraig Kirk, “outstanding progress is being made regarding plans to open the new facility”.
In 2010 the VEC completed a comprehensive study into the demand for all-Irish education at second-level in the county.
It found that significant levels of demand existed for such provision, particularly in places such as Drogheda, Dundalk and Ardee.
While the natural progression route for pupils who attend all-Irish primary schools is an all-Irish second-level school, a high percentage of pupils who attended English medium primary schools currently receive their second-level education through the medium of Irish.
The VECs new schools’ Implementation Team has made significant progress in a range of areas concerning the start-up school including the identification of a school crest, logo, uniform and curriculum.
An enrolment policy is nearing completion and a prospectus is at an advanced stage.
The prospectus is set to be distributed among prospective parents and students within weeks.
CEO, Dr. Kirk said that,
“most recently the implementation team has turned its attention to planning visits by Coláiste Lú staff to catchment area primary schools.
This will be quickly followed by the hosting of an information evening for parents and students, with an open day planned for early in the New Year”.
The team has already convened a core parents’ support group and an interim board of management will be established in January 2013.
A school transport service is being planned and a dedicated website will be launched shortly.
The CEO said that the implementation team will soon be in a position to make further details public.
“A start-up accommodation facility has been identified and is currently being ‘school proofed’.
Once this process is complete it will be possible to publicise further details”.
The VEC intend to keep the public updated on developments via regular press releases, public meetings and via its website - www.louthvec.ie.
