Co. Louth VECs Adult Learning Service was busy this week launching books to mark the national Adult Learners Festival.

The festival, organised annually by AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation, ran from 25th February to 2nd March.

Its purpose is to promote awareness among adults of the range of back to education services available and the opportunities and benefits of returning to education.

Two book launches took place this week, one in Dundalk and one in Drogheda.

The two books are compilations of the learners own work including poems, short stories, book reviews and other creative writing pieces.

An event to mark the launch of ‘In Our Own Words’, a compilation of work produced by those attending the VECs Adult Learning Service in Dundalk, took place on Thursday in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk.

The audience was welcomed by the CEO of Co. Louth VEC, Dr. Pádraig Kirk, and the book was launched by award winning author, Deirdre Purcell.

The CEO congratulated everybody involved in both publications.

“I congratulate each and every learner for making the tough but correct decision to return to education.

“I also pay tribute to our Adult Learning Service Coordinators, Maria Morgan and Mary Reilly, their resource staff and the large team of volunteer tutors that give so generously of their time to the service each year.

“Together, the whole team really turn people’s lives around; everyone can be extremely proud of their achievements”.

A separate event was held in the Boyne Valley Hotel in Drogheda on Tuesday.to mark the launch of ‘Getting There’, a compilation of work produced by those attending the VECs Adult Learning Service in Drogheda,

The Adult Learning Service provides tuition for adults who wish to return to learning in a supportive environment. The service is free and confidential.
