A new low as thieves break into Dundalk charity shop

LAST WEEK criminals sank to a new low in Dundalk when they broke into the St Vincent de Paul charity shop on Clanbrassil Street.
The cowardly criminals broke into the shop over the course of Thursday night/Friday morning, ransacking the offices for what amounted to a small amount of cash. The criminals broke in through a rear window on the premises, avoiding CCTV at the front of the shop and making their way to the top floor to the offices of the SVP.
Ashling Matthews, who works at the shop, was first at the scene.
“I came in the morning at 8.45 on Friday morning and saw glass on the kitchen floor, and then went up stairs to get the cash. I saw that the door was smashed in, and there were two iron bars left against the side of the door, and it dawned on me what had happened.”
This is the second time in course of 30 days that the charity shop has been targeted.
“It was shocking. These people are taking from the poor. The last break-in was done differently. I’d appeal to people to come forward if they have any information. This is a new low.”
Cllr Liam Reilly, area President of the SVP, said that the crooks made off with €600 in cash and €100 in vouchers.
“There is also the cost of the damage done, which runs into the hundreds. They used our fire extinguisher and iron bars. There is also loss of revenue from having to close the shop all day Friday.”
Liam Manning, regional organiser with the SVP told the paper: “There’s not much you can say, it’s very disappointing.”
“They turned over the place. They went upstairs to the two offices and ripped through the place.
“The thing is that all the profit made here goes to needy people, so these criminals are essentially taking money away from vulnerable people in Dundalk. It means there is less money, and that we will have to spend extra money fixing the place.”
