41% of births in Louth to unmarried couples

FORTY one per cent of births in Louth are to unmarried parents, compared with a national average of 35 per cent – new figures have revealed. 
CSO figures for the third quarter of 2012 also reveal that the birth rate in Louth is also higher in the Louth then the national average, with a rate of 16.1 compared to 15.7 per 1000 people.

205 of the 500 births registered in Louth were to parents outside of a marriage or a civil/partnership.

61 of the birth were registered to mothers under the age of 25.

The death rate is also lower in Louth in the third quarter, with a death rate of 5.7, compared to a natuional average of 6.

176 people died in Louth in the third quarter of the year.

Nationally there were 17,985 births registered in quarter 3 of 2012, 9,208 males and 8,777 females.

The corresponding total for quarter 3 2011 was 1,237 higher at 19,222 births, while the quarter 3 2007 total was 569 higher at 18,554 births.

The quarter 3 2012 total is 13 per cent higher than in 2003 when 15,909 babies were registered.

The 17,985 births represent an annual birth rate of 15.7 per 1,000 of the population, 1.1 per thousand lower than quarter 3 of 2011.

The average age of mothers for births registered in the quarter was 32.0 years, 0.3 years more than the corresponding figure in quarter in 2011.

The average age of mothers having their first child in quarter 3 2012 was 30.0 years.

There were no births registered as being within civil partnerships in the state for the quarter.

There were 6,250 births registered as outside marriage/civil partnership in quarter 3 of 2012. This accounted for 34.8 per cent of all births, an increase of 0.8 percentage points on 2011 and an increase of 2.4 percentage points on quarter 3 2007.

The highest percentage of births outside marriage/civil partnership was in Limerick City at 56.0 per cent, while the lowest percentage of births outside marriage/civil partnership was in Galway County at 22.1 per cent.
