€2million toxic price tag

LOUTH COUNTY have warned that if toxic sludge continues to be dumped at the rate it has been over the last month and a half, then taxpayers could be left to foot a €2 million bill.

This warning comes as more toxic sludge was found this week.

A contractor on behalf Louth County Council recovered 10 Integrated Bulk Containers( IBC’s) at Fintan’s Ceili House on the N53 Castleblaney Road yesterday Monday, 13 February.

“Volumes of the sludge recovered so far this year are approximately 90 per cent up on last year. If current trends continue expenditure on recovery and disposal operations are likely to cost in the region of €2 million for 2012,” says Paddy Donnelly.

This dump is the latest such find in what is a problem that has spiralled to unprecendented levels.

Astonishingly, the rate of dumping in 2011 has risen by a massive 3600 per cent in the space of just two years.

In 2009 27 tonnes were found in Louth, while in 2010 that rose to 220 tonnes, while last year a staggering 989 tonnes were dumped.
