Struck Garda with beer can

A 20 year-old local man who broke a stained glass window in an hotel struck a Garda on the nose with a can of beer when he went to investigate the incident with colleagues.

Dundalk Court heard that Paul Jackson of Mill Road caused €430 euro worth of damage to a door while attending a family wedding at the Carrickdale Hotel on May 10thth last.

Three Gardai went to the hotel where the defendant was in a bedroom. He became very abusive and aggressive and while being arrested struck one member on the bridge of the nose with the can and pepper spray was used to restrain him.

Jackson received a 12 month suspended jail sentence. Judge Flann Brennan also imposed suspended jail terms on Jackson for other assault and criminal damage offences which were before the court for review.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell said Jackson re-acted badly when the Gardai arrived. He argued that the defendant had moved a considerable distance in the past few years from when drugs were a feature of his criminality.

When he indulged in alcohol it got him into trouble, but the probation service hadn’t given up hope on him not offending if he abstained from alcohol.

Judge Brennan said the problem wasn’t he drank but he was violent. The world was full of people who drank to excess but are fine. He tried everything else and given chances to the defendant.
