A Dundalk woman who wishes to organise a Redeemer Majorettes reunion is looking for feedback from past dancers.

Olivia McGee from Coxes Demesne is the brains behind the majorettes reunion.

“Myself and my sister Michelle was talking about the good old days,” Olivia told The Dundalk Democrat, “That’s how the idea came about.

“We said that it would be great to have a reunion and reminisce about days gone by.”

Olivia had originally scheduled the reunion for this weekend in the Clans, although she was forced to cancel it as there wasn’t enough feedback.

“We had a page on Facebook, but I didn’t get the feedback that was needed to book the Clans.

“Maybe because people are on holidays and parents are dealing with teenagers who have exams.

“We have postponed it until sometime in September. We want people to get involved and dig out old photographs.”

The Redeemer Majorettes was one of the most successful marching groups in Ireland back in the day.

The Majorettes was established and run for many years by the late Briege Donnelly.

The Majorettes were not only an exciting outlet for young girls, but also earned for the Redeemer parish considerable recognition at events all over the country.

It was then run for sometime by the late Olive Hoey, although the hay-day of majorettes never really returned.

“Everybody in the area was in the majorettes at the time,” said Olivia, “This was a time when everybody was out on the streets playing and having fun with each other.

“We travelled with Briege all over Ireland and abroad. We won many competitions in the Isle of Man and Arklow. We were the Irish champions in many routines.

“It was a fantastic time of our lives. It would be great to get everybody under one roof and reminisce.

“There is so much history and stories to tell. It would be a great event if there was interest in holding a reunion.

“We might even do a routine on the night,” laughed Olivia.
