Met Eireann issue orange weather alert

Met Eireann have issued an orange weather alert for the whole country tonight and those in high risk flood areas in Louth should be prepared.

The weather is about to take a turn for the worst this evening with temperatures set to drop and some showers will turn wintry.

Tonight, winds will strengthen gradually and it will become extremely windy and with lowest temperatures of 0 to 2 degrees.

Drivers should take care as there will be sharp ground frost in places and the risk of some icy patches on roads.

However, south to south-west winds will strengthen before morning and showers will develop clearing any frost.

Very windy conditions will prevail for most of Saturday with strong to gale force and gusty south-west winds.

There will be good dry periods but wintry showers will occur throughout the day and a covering of snow is likely on higher ground. It will be a bitterly cold day so wrap up well as highest temperatures will reach only 5 or 6 degrees.
