Man assaulted on Castletown Road has died from his injuries

A popular local publican who was assaulted on the Castletown Road in Dundalk on Friday night has died in hospital.

Lawrence McGeown, from Toberona, was assaulted on Friday evening in a public house on Castletown Road.

Gardaí have arrested a man in his 30’s in connection with the assault which occurred between 9 and 10:30 pm on Friday 28th February 2014.

The man was arrested in the Dundalk area yesterday afternoon.

He is currently detained at Dundalk Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Mr McGeown received serious head injuries following the assault.

He received treatment for his injuries following the attack on Friday night and returned home to Toberona. However, when his daughter went to check on him the following day he was unconscious.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he succumbed to his injuries this afternoon in Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Castletown Road area between 8:30pm and 12 midnight on Friday (28/2/14) or who may have information to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042-9388400 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800-666-111.
