THE Greenore-based tidal technology company OpenHydro has been given the Technology of the Year Prize at the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards for their Open-Centre Tidal Turbine.

The prize-winning product was developed at the firm’s technical centre at Greenore.

The turbine’s thoughtful design takes account of its intended undersea location in a variety of ways, not least by minimising the risk posed to marine life.

The open centre and enclosed rotor blades enable fish to swim through the device unscathed, and have the added effect of increasing efficiency and reliability.

Engineers Ireland Director General and Chartered Engineer, John Power said the quality and quantity of entries was extremely competitive this year and it was exciting to see such innovative projects shortlisted.

In addition to the Technology of the Year competition, the third Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards also included:

Environmental Infrastructure Award - Cavan County Council, Erne Valley Group Water Scheme and Tobin Consulting Engineers for the Upgrade of the Erne Valley Group Water Scheme.

Award for Eoin Bambury from Crospon as Chartered Engineer of the Year. Engineering Project of Year – Cill Rónáin Harbour Inis Mór.
