With St. Brigid’s Day coming up this Saturday, 1 February pupils in fifth and sixth classes in Faughart National School took part in a workshop at the school to learn the art of making a St Brigid’s Cross.

St Brigid’s cross-making is a tradition the school has held dear for many years and every year trailer loads of rushes, which are sourced in the local bog, are delivered to the school.

“It’s a lot of hard work,” said school secretary Helen Cumiskey. “The rushes are sorted, washed and trimmed before being made into the crosses which are sold for the shrine.

“On Saturday the shrine will be covered with thousands of crosses and it really is a sight to behold.

“People come from all over the country, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal to name a few places, ”

Class teacher Lauren Higgins said she had never seen the students as quiet as they were completely occupied with the task at hand and some had completed multiple crosses.

“They pick the skill up very easily and are great cross-makers.”

Ms. Cumiskey explained that St. Brigid’s Relic, which is kept in Kilcurry Church will be taken to the old Faughart Graveyard, on the eve of St. Brigid’s day for possession to St. Brigid’s Shrine.

“Hundreds of people line up to get blessed by or kiss the Relic,” said Ms. Cumiskey.

The Relic will remain at the Shrine for two days, Friday, 31 January and Saturday. 1 February.

A host of lectures and workshops will take place for St. Brigid’s Festival, starting from tomorrow (Wednesday, 29 January) until Sunday, 2 February.

Special guests over the duration of the festival will include Una Casey, Maura Lennon, Stephanie O’Hanlon, Kate Fitzpatrick, Dolores Whelan, Karen Ward, Roisin Cotter, Damien O’Callaghan and many more.

A special Eucharist on St.Brigid’s Day will be given with Fr. Tom Hamill and special guest Pádrigín Ní Uallacháin at the Oratory at Faughart Shrine from 1-2pm.
