Gardai found man half way through window

Gardai on mobile patrol came upon a man whose torso was half way through the front window of a house he was attempting to get into, Dundalk district court heard last week

The court was told a Romanian national who lived there was terrified and could not understand what the defendant was shouting at her.

Insp. Kevin Daly gave evidence that 33 year old Ciaran Halligan with an address at Castleross in Dundalk, was found trying to get in the front window of the house on Distillery Lane on the 10th of July last.

Insp. Daly said that when gardai came upon him, the accused was shouting at the top of his voice and making threats to cause damage and the woman who lived there - who is from Romania, could not understand what he was saying and told gardai she was terrified.

The court was told the accused had four previous convictions.

The Defence solicitor said that his client gets into trouble when he drinks too much and had no recollection of the incident, and could only apologise profusely.

He added the accused had no ill-will towards the woman - who he does not know, and has cut down on his drinking and moderated it dramatically.

Judge William Hamill put back the case until the 19th of February so the defendant’s suitability for community service could be assessed.

He said he was thinking of imposing 100 hours or a three months sentence.
