Funding needed for SONG project

Dundalk musical theatre group SONG are currently working on fundraising projects to help out with the costs of their next production Sweeney Todd, The Musical which will take place in An Tain Theatre in February 2015.

The amateur company will, for the first time, have a professional director working with the company, Rob Vickers. Rob is one of Ireland’s leading actors and singers who recently was a member of the cast of Les Miserables in London.

The groups musical director, Patrick Dunne, is also a former musical director of Riverdance and has worked with Phil Coulter and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

The group are trying to raise €10,000 as their projected box office receipts only cover aproximately 55% of their costs. Plans for raising the €10,000 include a concert on 19 September in Dundalk Golf Club, a Christmas concert in December and a table quiz in January 2015.

The money raised will go toward the hiring of costumes, make-up and hair, the cost of special effects and essential props needed for this fantastic show.

The groups previous productions include Oliver, Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar, Jekyll and Hyde, Chess, The Pirate Queen and the Irish premiere of Little Women The Musical in November of last year.

They have won numerous awards and have performed at the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera.

The group strive to present modern musicals and several of their members have gone on to pursue careers in the musical and theatrical world.

As well as performing on stage, members gain valuable experience backstage, working as stage crew, make-up and hair assistants, costume assistants, front of house management and assist with media.

Auditions were recently held for leading roles within the musical and the final round of auditions will take place on 31 August. Rehearsals will commence in September.
