Fine Gael candidate for Dundalk-Carlingford, John McGahon, spoke about youth unemployment at the party’s Ard Fheis at the weekend.
McGahon, the youngest candidate confirmed locally for the upcoming elections, called on the government to ensure that young people are prioritised for training schemes and offered every support possible to enter the work force.
John’s speech, which was broadcast live on RTE, received a strong reception from delegates.
He spoke of his generations desire to “rebuild Ireland for those who left and want to return.”
“Ireland is currently above the European average for youth unemployment,” John told The Dundalk Democrat.
“It is vital that we have an active and engaged young people in our workforce contributing in a meaningful way to society.
“Ireland has one of the youngest populations in Europe and its time we harnessed the talent and energy that my generation has.
“We need to ensure that more young people are prioritised for employment and training schemes so they have the necessary experience and skills when they enter the workforce.”
