DkIT officially purchase JJB

DkIT has signed on the dotted line to purchase and transfer the ownership of the former JJB/Ice Dome complex to the Institute.

The entire complex will now be known as DkIT Sport and includes the ice dome, a 20 meter swimming pool with steam rooms and jacuzzi, indoor football pitches and a gym.

DkIT intends to tender for the operation of the facility in early January. Up to thirty five jobs will be created when it reopens next year.

The news heralds the on-going development of DkIT into a world class campus that has seen more than 40,000 people gain access to higher education.

DkIT President Denis Cummins added “I am delighted that we have been able to acquire the JJB sports centre.

“When the acquisition is completed in January the institute will begin preparing for the opening in September 2014.

“This magnificent complex will be an asset for future students and for this region and I want thank our students for their support for this project because we could not have proceeded without it.”

Upon signing of the contract, Chairman of the Governing Body, Mr Andrew Griffith, extended his gratitude to the President and vice chair Clifford Kelly and his staff for the hard work and effort behind the delivery of this landmark acquisition.

Senator Jim D’Arcy welcomed the news and said:“It is also a major milestone on the road to DKIT achieving University status.”
