Senator Jim D’Arcy has been appointed to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
The Council of Europe meets in Strasbourg and is responsible for the European Convention on Human Rights and the appointment of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights. Members are also called on to monitor elections in different parts of the world.
“‘I am very honoured to have been given this appointment”, said Senator D’Arcy, “I look forward to working with members from the 47 countries who are part of the Council of Europe to further peace, prosperity and human rights in the wider Europe”.
Senator D’Arcy will attend his first session this week and some of the issues to be discussed are the appointment ofJudges to the European Court of Human Rights, Internet and politics , the impact of information and communication technology on democracy and Syrian Refugees ; how to organise and support international assistance.
“I have also been appointed to the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media and the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development so I have a lot to get my teeth into and I am really looking forward to the challenge’, stated Senator D’Arcy.
