Louth gardener, Andrew Christopher Dunne, reigns supreme as he scoops gold and best in his category for his garden ‘You’ll Talk I’ll Listen’ at this year’s Bloom, Bord Bia’s annual gardening, food and family festival.

Andrew is a Bloom newcomer and his garden was sponsored by the Samaritans and entitled ‘You’ll Talk I’ll Listen”..

His formal design features a series of shallow terraces constructed out of Donegal sandstone, ornamental water-cut steel panels and a series of “rusted” steel poles surrounded by multistemmed birch and handsome foliage plants.

A small, tranquil, relaxing and social space, the garden represents the room to breathe and think clearly which talking to the Samaritans can offer.

Andrew owns a multi-award winning design practice based in the north east of Ireland which he established in 1999 and specialises in the design and construction of high quality unique gardens with an emphasis on style and beauty.

“Our garden, entitled “You talk I’ll Listen,” is a tranquil relaxing, social space designed to highlight the powerful effects of simply talking about your problems,” said Andrew.

“The garden represents the room to breathe and think clearly that talking to the Samaritans can offer.

“It consists of a sunken garden with two large benches designed for two people to sit and talk in a safe calming environment.

“The dappled shade offered by the multi-stemmed birch trees and the cool woodland planting further enhances the calming effect of the garden.

“At the rear of the garden there is a stunning hand forged swing which seeks to represent the comfort and cradling support a friendly voice can offer.

“Rusted tanks of black water nestled amongst the planting reflect the darkness that is present in many of our lives, it is only when we talk about our troubles that we can once again see the beauty that life (the garden) has to offer.”

Bloom is the country’s biggest annual gardening, food and family festival and takes place in the grounds of the historic Ashtown demesne in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.

This year’s five-day event included 30 show gardens, 50 nurseries housed within the show’s Floral and Nursery Pavilion, over 100 food and drink producers, and almost 200 retailers, all contained within the 70-acre site.
