Louth County Council has granted planning permission for a seven screen cinema at the Marshes Shopping Centre in Dundalk.

The Marshes Shopping Centre was granted permission at the end of May to build its seven screen cinema with ticket kiosk and food / beverage concession sales areas and two restaurant units, having first applied for planning permission in December.

This is the second cinema planned for the town following the decision earlier this year to grant permission for a multiplex at the Harvey Norman units at Dundalk Retail Park.

The Marshes Shopping Centre had lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanala when the planning permission for another cinema project at Dundalk Retail Park was granted by the local authority.

IMC cinema at Carroll Village objected to both these developments.

They said the proposed cinemas “threaten the viability of the existing cinema, a long established town centre use, and should therefore be refused permission.”

Marshes Shopping Centre Manager, Mr Harry Traynor says that the centre was hopeful that they would be granted permission for the cinema multiplex as it is something that customers want.

“We carry out customer research a few times a year,” said Mr Traynor.

“And each time our patrons ask for a cinema when asked what they would like to see in the shopping centre.

“We hope that by building the cinema in the shopping centre it will keep business here in town and discourage people from travelling to Newry.”

Mr Traynor said that the potential reduction of car parking by 213 spaces would not have a negative impact on the shopping centre.

“We did a traffic study and are satisfied that we have the ability to facilitate the cinema and all car parking needs without any adverse effects on the rest of the shopping centre.”

The shopping centre will build the cinema on the southern part of car park one, located to the east of the shopping centre.

Mr Traynor says that the multiplex will similar to other models which include retail shops, restaurants and a cinema all under one roof.

“Our model will be no different to other cinemas.”

Mr Traynor said that no plans to begin building have been made just yet. “

We have just gotten over the first hurdles so are in no rush.”
