Carlingford Oyster Pearl competition cancelled due to lack of funding

There was sad news last week as it was announced that the nationally renowned Carlingford Oyster Pearl’ competition, in which 12 ladies compete for the crown in a weekend of fun filled activities, was cancelled.

“It is with sad regret, that due to lack of funding, this year’s Carlingford Oysterpearl will not be taking place,” said a spokesperson for the competition.

“We look forward to bringing it back in 2015 and our reigning pearl Michelle McGrath will get to hold on to her crown until August 2015.”

On a more positive note the Carlingford Oyster Festival In Association With Morgans Fine Fish will still be taking place but on a much smaller scale than last years event.

The Oyster Festival will take place from Friday, 8 August until Monday, 11 August.

The famous festival promises four fun-filled days with a packed programme of fun and delicious food.

The festival will go ahead thanks to some very saving corporate sponsorship from Morgans Fine Fish Omeath and Parkview Provisions Newry,

The financial support from some local businesses was also greatly appreciated.

Sticking to the success of last year’s festival the aim once again this year is to keep the festival family orientated and full of fun activities for all the children including dance workshops, a funfair, a roaming street magician, balloon modelling, Creature Works street theatre, an oyster welly hunt, a teddy bear picnic, bouncy castles, colouring competition at the Four Seasons, kayaking in the harbour and World Crab Fishing Championships, courtesy of the Carlingford Adventure Centre.Of course there will also be plenty of oyster eating too.

There will be plenty of music entertainment over the four days with live music playing in all local bars over the weekend. On Saturday there will be live music with Ireland’s number one JCB Man Seamus Moore and special guest Slim Attraction.

On Sunday the Carlingford Pipe Band will play in the village centre at 4.30pm and there will be live music from The Enemies afterward.

On Monday the end of festival dance will take place in Mc Kevitts Village Hotel on the village square. For a full scheledule of events visit or if you are interested in taking a stall at the festival’s craft market in the tennis courts please email
