The curtain soon rises on this year’s fun-packed and exciting transition year musical production in St Louis Secondary School, Carrickmacross.

From Wednesday 5 March enter the school hall at your peril as Bugsy Malone, Fat Sam and the gang wage a fierce territorial battle against Dandy Dan and his well-armed henchmen. Dan has a new weapon, the Splurge gun at his disposal and Sam’s gang is not so much being ripped apart as whipped apart!

Since “Bugsy Malone” first appeared as a film, marking the debut of Alan Parker, it has been adapted for stage and has taken school musicals by storm.

This enormously entertaining play features all the transition year students in St Louis Secondary School who are eagerly putting the finishing touches to rehearsals. Director Sonya Sexton has brought this amusing send-up of gangster movies to life, while Musical Director Eileen English is guiding the students through the show’s famous musical numbers. The memorable ragtime choruses of “You Give A Little Love”, “Down and Out” and “Bad Guys” in this fast-moving production means that it will appeal to everyone,

irrespective of age.

For three nights only, the St Louis School hall will become the hidden underworld of downtown New York during the prohibition era. Fat Sam’s Speakeasy is the hottest nightspot in town. Sam played by Holly Ryan, has a problem, Dandy Dan, played by Hailey Babington wants to take over Sam’s empire and Dandy Dan and his gang are armed and dangerous. Dandy Dan’s Gang played by Eibhlin Clinton, Eimear McGinn, Ann-Marie McArdle, Orla Ni Fhaircheallaigh and Leigh Doherty have the latest deadly weapon at their disposal, the Splurge gun. This is too much for Sam’s gang played by Shauna Bermingham, Laura Farrelly, Sarah McCaul, Alanna Meighan and Katie Oates who are armed with only custard pies. Things are sure to get messy! When battle breaks out Sam enlists the help of every girl’s dream and every cop’s nightmare, Bugsy Malone played by Niamh Morris.

“Bugsy Malone” runs in St. Louis school hall from 5 to 7 March. Tickets are available from Tuesday 25 February at the Main Ardee. Prices are €10 with €8 concessions.
