Lack of new pupils has been given as the cause of the closure of Ages and Stages creche in Mulaharin Park.
Outgoing manager of Ages and Stages creche, Tina Rooney, said that a lack of new pupils and a “lack of cash” is behind the sudden closure.
“The vast majority of parents using the creche were on a scheme, so there wasn’t money coming through the door each week,” Ms Rooney told the Democrat.
Since 2008, Dundalk ICTU Centre Ltd. who originally ran the creche, has been participating in the Community Childcare Subvention Scheme (CCSS)
Unlike privately run creches, Ages and Stages which can cater for 47 children at any one time, at affordable rates.
Most of the children and the families that benefit from Ages and Stages are those on low incomes, members of ethnic minorities, HSE referrals and parents accessing training and employment schemes.
Including a capital grant and staffing cost subvention, Pobal have paid out over 1.2 million to the creche since 2006. Included in that was over €100,000 staffing subventions per annum.
