There has been an overwhelming response to the appeal for the safe return of two watches belonging to the late Stephen Carroll. The watches were stolen from his parents’ home in Blackrock in January. Now, a number of businesses have teamed up to offer a reward for the missing watches. A west of Ireland insurance company, Hastings Insurance Brokers is offering €1,500. Also, two businessmen in Meath have put up a thousand euro each, a taxi driver in Cork has put up a similar sum and a businessman in Swords has also offered a reward for information leading to their return. The latest reward to be offered is from Blackrock business, Belles Tearooms who last week added a €750 reward, taking total sum to €5,000.
Through the power of social media the family’s heartfelt campaign has touched many and has led to re-tweets from many celebs including Amy Huberman and Brian O’Driscoll, who have 500,000 followers between them.
Other re-tweets came from Ian Dempsey, Jennifer Maguire, Colm O’Sullivan, The Rubberbandits, Mairead Farrell, Joe Duffy and Lawrence Dallaglio.
A nationwide media response was launched following the family’s appeal on the RTE Six-One news with features running in a number of national newspapers.
Stephen’s wife Breffnie and his sister Adele also appeared on TV3’s Ireland AM in what was a heart-wrenching interview to appeal for information, which also led to an invitation by RTE to appear on ‘The Saturday Night Show’. Other interviews included those on the Ray Darcy Show, Newstalk, Spin 103.8, 4FM, Ulster Radio, 98FM, LMFM and the appeal received 26,000 hits on Journal.ie as well as 3,500 hits on YouTube
According to Stephen’s sister-in-law Kerrie, the response to this appeal has been unbelievable.
“Stephen’s family are completely overwhelmed by the support shown to us and we would like to thank absolutely everyone who has supported us in this time from family to neighbours and friends as well as so many members of the public, emailing us possible leads of watches they have found for sale. We want them all to know that every single one of these leads has been explored and every message of support has been relayed to the family’.
“So many people have helped by putting up adverts online, posters and rewards for the return of the precious watches. We have been blown away by the kindness and support that has been shown. We can only appeal to the conscience of those that took the watches to return them to an utterly devastated family who have already suffered so much.”
